Page impressions - a.k.a. page requests -or- page views. The number of times a Web page is requested from a server. This is the preferred counting method for traffic measurement (instead of hits) because it only counts documents, not individual files. A single HTML page is counted as one page impression.

Page rank - To be accurate this term is written as "PageRank" because it is trademarked by Google; however, it is commonly seen and written as "page rank." It is Google's ranking software that calculates how relevant a Web page is to the keywords a user enters when doing an online search on Google.com. This software (which operates behind the scenes) analyzes both the number of incoming links and the quality of the referring Web page. It then produces a relative measure between 0 (low) and 10 (high) which is seen as a green bar next to the search result on Google.com (above), or seen as a number in the Google Toolbar on your browser. Page rank has become a very hot topic amongst online marketers, SEO consultants, and Webmasters because of the popularity of Google. If your site has a high page rank (for example 7-10), your site will appear higher in the organic search results on Google, and therefore be more valuable to online advertisers.

Paid listings - Listings that search engines sell to online advertisers, usually through paid search) or paid inclusion programs (such as CPC). In contrast, organic listings are not sold.

Payment gateway - An application that is resident on a merchant's server (or a server located at the merchant's ISP or CSP) that accepts payment information, encrypts it and routes it across the Internet to a payment gateway.

PEAR - The PHP Extension and Application Repository (or PEAR) framework comprises reusable components. These components or "packages" solve specific problems encountered by developers working on PHP-based Web applications. The PEAR site is located at http://www.pear.php.net/

Perl - Perl is one of the original server side scripting languages. It is still popular today.

PHP - PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially well-suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML.

PNG - PNG is an image file format popular on the Web and elsewhere. It is intended as a replacement for the GIF image format. PNG stands recursively for "PNG's Not GIF" but is commonly referred to as "Portable Network Graphics". PNG is not affected by software patents. Its compression algorithm is slightly better than GIF, and it supports many more image file formats including 24-bit colour and alpha (variable transparency) channels. With the exception of alpha channels, PNG is well-supported in recent graphics software and Web browsers.

Pop-up - A new window that suddenly appears on your computer screen is referred to as a "pop-up window."

Presentational JavaScript - JavaScript that supplements CSS in it's presentation of data in places where CSS lacks features (for example 'rounded corners').

Procedural programming - A programming methodology involving a linear, 'shopping list' approach to programming. This contrasts with the more abstracted approach of 'Object Oriented Programming'

Propagation - Put simply, it's the transmission of signals from one place to another. On the Net, it works like this: When you move your Web site from one IP address to another (by changing the server it is hosted on), the DNS must point to the new address. Once you make the request (with your ISP or with InterNIC) to have the DNS point to the new location, it may take 48 to 96 hours (or even up to 5 days) for all of the networks to process the change. This is because the Internet exists on many different networks. You could see your site listed under its new IP address using PacBell phone lines, for example, but a friend trying to look at it from another location using NYNEX phone lines, for example may not see the new address until the propagation takes full effect.

Proprietary - Something that a company has not divulged, especially regarding design or technique specifications that would allow other companies to duplicate the product. Proprietary software, for example, has been privately developed and is privately owned and controlled.
